Therapy is a thought-provoking, significant educational opportunity that can be the foundation of a lifelong process of self-enlightenment. It provides a special opportunity to increase your satisfaction with yourself, your relationships, and your career. You will gain skills you can build upon and use throughout your life. My goal is to provide a warm, congenial atmosphere so you can be at ease in expressing your desires and needs. I conceptualize therapy as a team effort: you are the expert on yourself, and I’m an expert in methods and skills to help you achieve your desired changes. Together, we create a winning team! You can be assured your appointments will be held in confidence and conducted with the utmost integrity.

Substance Use Recovery
You’ll be an active participant in planning your individualized counseling, and you will be treated respectfully and non-judgmentally. Your personalized program will include simple instructions on how to recover.

You’ll receive straightforward, educational information, so you can understand the science of addiction. The educational information and skills you learn will assist you in  respecting and liking yourself, so you can continue to grow and pursue your goals. Chemical addiction is a medical condition – not bad behavior!  You will learn alternative, non-drug methods for stress-reduction, recreation, and problem-solving. If needed, you’ll learn relationship and communication skills.

Pathways uses evidence-based methods for effective recovery. This means a program combines the best available research with clinical expertise, your personal characteristics and unique needs. Two methods often used are Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Depending on your needs, either a risk-reduction (modification) or abstinence approach is utilized. If you desire, the philosophy of a 12-step program can be integrated into your personalized Pathways program. Twelve-step program involvement is a personal choice and not a requirement. Overcoming a reliance on alcohol or drugs requires the support of a professional who is educated, skilled, and experienced in the specialized area of recovery from addictions.

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind that everyone experiences and can learn to access at will. Hypnosis is a concentrated focus that enables you to enter into Alpha and Theta brain wave patterns. You are always in control of yourself. The therapist is only a guide giving you verbal instructions that allow you to hypnotize yourself. You have the choice to end the hypnosis at any time. You will remember what happened during hypnosis, and you will not reveal secrets unless that’s your goal. One of the remarkable qualities of hypnosis is that it allows your unconscious mind to work to your benefit while you go about your daily activities! All that is required for success is a willingness to participate, the ability to follow directions, and an openness to imagination.

Hypnosis allows us to work with the unconscious mind. There is great potential waiting to be tapped in the unconscious. This part of the mind is the reservoir of self-concept, habits, and our beliefs about the world and relationships.

Psychologists estimate that 80% of our perception of ourselves, others, and the world is formed by age eight. Our self-esteem, the intrinsic value we perceive we have and the value we perceive we have to the world, is formed by the interactions our primary caregivers had with us in those very early years. Years when we didn’t have the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate what others said about us or to consider the environmental stressors occurring at the time. During those very young years, the mind attributes bad events to Self. With this knowledge, you can appreciate having a line of communication with that part of the mind!  The unconscious is the creative part of the mind, and it permits unique, effective solutions to challenges that don’t always resolve through use of the conscious mind. The wide range of applications for hypnosis includes more efficient talk therapy, medical anesthesia and enhanced healing, sports performance, treatment of anxiety, phobias, depression, and emotional healing.
